About smaver

Smaver was created from shared frustration and lived experience. We saw too many Australians enter the property market feeling unprepared, overwhelmed and unsupported. Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make. It should feel clear and empowering, not confusing and stacked against you.

We exist to make the journey smarter, fairer and more transparent for home buyers across Australia.

Why we created smaver

Smaver was built by the team at Small Business Australia. The idea began decades ago, after Bill’s own difficult buying experience in the late 1980s when mortgage interest rates reached 17.5%.

Since then, the internet and AI have delivered more information than ever before. Yet many Australians still believe home ownership is out of reach. First-time buyers continue to make costly mistakes. And the system still favours sellers, while buyers are left to navigate contracts, finance and negotiations with limited education and support.

We believe home ownership should be within reach. It should be understandable. And it should not rely on industry jargon or hidden costs.

Each member of the smaver team has walked their own path to home ownership.

One has more than 30 years of banking experience, helping Australians build savings, understand lending and navigate regulation around accounts and home loans. That insider perspective revealed how complex processes and unclear information can disadvantage first-time buyers and anyone without financial confidence.

Another bought their first home by living on a strict budget, tracking every expense and sacrificing lifestyle comforts for years to build a deposit. They learned how discipline, small changes and government incentives can make ownership possible. They also experienced how overwhelming the planning phase can be without clear guidance.

Another received a family windfall that made buying possible sooner than expected. What should have felt simple quickly became stressful. Stamp duty, conveyancing, bank fees, insurance, moving costs and ongoing ownership expenses added up fast. Even a fortunate start did not remove the knowledge gap.

After many conversations, one thing became clear. Property buying guidance in Australia was not built for buyers. Too many services and products are designed to maximise sale prices and protect seller interests, not support the person committing their savings and income to a home.

Smaver was created to change that.

How we built it

We set out to create a platform built for buyers, informed by experience and grounded in real expertise.

To do that, we listened.

We interviewed budgeting professionals to understand realistic savings strategies and challenge common deposit myths.

We spoke with banking experts and lenders, drawing on decades of practical finance experience to break down the loan process from application to approval with a buyer-first focus.

We consulted buyer’s advocates and selling agents to understand negotiation tactics, pricing strategies and contract traps, so our community can recognise risks before signing anything.

We examined advice from insurers, mortgage advisers, debt specialists and conveyancers to uncover the hidden costs and steps that often catch buyers off guard.

We worked closely with solicitors and legal experts to translate complex legal language into plain English checklists and practical guidance.

The result is a learning hub that simplifies the process, explains the jargon, highlights the real costs and provides clear next steps at every stage of the journey.
